How to Deal with Newborn Baby Hiccups?

What Happens When a Newborn Baby Has Hiccups?

1. The hiccups are triggered by the cold that the baby gets due to improper care by the parents. If there are no other illnesses, but the baby suddenly burps, and the burp is high and strong and continuous, it is usually due to cold. At this time, you can give your baby some hot water, and pay attention to keeping the chest and abdomen warm by covering him with warm clothes or putting a hot water bag outside the clothes and quilt to keep warm in winter. If your baby has hiccups for a long time or frequently, you can also soak a small amount of orange peel in boiling water (orange peel has the function of unblocking the qi, transforming gastric turbidity, and regulating the spleen) and drink it when the water temperature is suitable, and the hiccups will stop when the cold is suitable.

2. Due to the lack of diet control for the baby, giving the baby too much milk, or eating too much cold milk, or taking too much cold medicine, will weaken the baby’s spleen and stomach function, making the stomach gas rebel and move the diaphragm, resulting in hiccups. At this time, parents can use methods to eliminate food and guide stagnation, such as giving a gentle massage to the baby’s chest and abdomen to let the hiccups move downward or drinking hawthorn water to pass gas and stool (hawthorn is sour, eliminates food and strengthens the stomach, and increases the secretion of digestive enzymes) so that the gas will be smooth and the hiccups will naturally stop.

3. Hiccups can also be triggered by the baby choking for a while after eating too quickly or crying. Newborn hiccups are mostly benign self-limiting hiccups that are not as uncomfortable as adults, and they will be fine after a while, so parents don’t need to worry too much.

How to Do When Newborn Hiccups?

1. The baby will burp after eating the milk and laying it down flat. This is because the newborn baby swallowed an excessive amount of air by sucking hard while sucking milk, causing a bloated stomach. Therefore, parents can hold the baby vertically after the baby has finished drinking milk, let the baby’s headrest on the shoulder, gently pat the baby’s upper back with a hollow palm, hold the baby vertically for half an hour, and then let the baby lie down; or parents gently massage the baby’s abdomen to help exhaust, can also be very good to prevent the baby hiccups or overflowing milk and other phenomena.

2. Parents should feed the correct posture, let the baby sit diagonally on the lap of parents to drink milk; drinking milk should also avoid letting the baby drink too quickly, or the milk is too cold, too hot.

3. Parents should not feed their babies when they are overly hungry and cry a lot, and usually feed in a quiet environment.

4. You can give your baby a small number of multiple feedings, let your baby take a break when you are halfway through feeding, help your baby pat the exhaust, and then drink the rest of the milk. You can also feed your baby a little warm water when he or she has hiccups, or use a toy that interests your baby to attract his or her attention and improve his or her hiccups.

5. If your baby has hiccups caused by gastroesophageal reflux, you can let your baby lean vertically on your parent’s shoulder after feeding him or her and don’t let him or her lie flat for half an hour, and then add supplementary foods to increase the consistency of the milk after he or she reaches 4 months of age to prevent hiccups.

The Correct Position To Help Burp a Newborn

1. Hold your baby upright on your shoulder: Whether standing or sitting, your mother should hold your baby as upright as possible on her shoulder, gently clasp your baby with the strength of your hands and body, and then pat your baby’s upper back with the palm of your hand.

2. Sitting on the lap: The mother sits and lets the baby sit on her lap facing her, with one hand propped up between the baby’s head, jaw, and the family beach, and the other hand patting the baby’s upper back.

3. Side lying on the lap: Mom sits down with her legs together and puts the baby horizontally on her lap, with the baby’s head slightly facing down. The mother can hold the lower half of the baby’s body with one hand and pat the baby’s upper back with the other hand.

How to Prevent Hiccups In Newborns?

1. Avoid inhaling extra air: Pay attention to the feeding posture and make the milk with less air, so that your baby can avoid inhaling extra air when eating milk.

2. Pay attention to the milk-drinking posture.

Breastfeeding: Mothers must learn various breastfeeding positions carefully and adjust them well before each feeding, and then let the baby start sucking.

Bottle feeding: Whether you are holding your baby to drink milk or letting your baby drink milk against other objects, pay attention to the head-high body-low posture, and it is necessary to maintain a certain tilt angle.

3. Brewing method: When brewing milk powder for your baby, you should add the right amount of warm water before adding the milk powder, to avoid clumping of milk powder, causing the nipple to be blocked, and inhaling too much air.

4. Nipple use: Also, it is best to hold the bottle side to side when shaking the bottle, to shake the bottle left and right to avoid shaking up and down, and increase the gas in the bottle.

5. Hold at least 2/3: When putting the nipple or pacifier into the baby’s mouth, you should let the baby hold at least 2/3 of it and make sure it is placed on the baby’s tongue, otherwise, the milk will overflow and the baby will easily inhale too much air. For babies who are often flatulent, you can use anti-colic pacifiers and bottles as appropriate.

6. Let your baby drink fewer sips: The air in the bottle usually remains gradually at the top (forming white bubbles), so it is best not to let your baby drink the milk in the bottle completely. This will also reduce some of the gas from entering the body.

The Baby Has Frequent Hiccups

“Uh, uh” baby hiccups again! Many mothers are puzzled: Is your baby not full? Why is your baby hiccuping? Mothers are always cautious and wary of treating a newborn baby with care, probing for half a day for fear that the baby is not feeling well.

Frequent hiccups in babies may indeed be caused by gastroesophageal reflux, which may lead to frequent hiccups and even dry vomiting, requiring prompt medical attention. Most of the time, however, a baby’s hiccups are probably just normal physiological causes.

Hiccups in babies are not a big problem and do not affect their health

During the first few months of life, your baby’s nervous system is still immature, including those nerves that control the transverse septum. When your baby eats milk too quickly or inhales cold air, the nerves controlling the septum are stimulated, causing the diaphragm to contract suddenly and inhale quickly, and then your baby begins to hiccup rhythmically.

If the hiccups do not interfere with eating or sleeping, they will not hurt the baby’s health and the mother does not need to be too nervous. As your baby gets older, the hiccups will gradually decrease.

That said, it can be a mess for a mother to watch her baby’s constant “uh, uh” hiccups. What are the best ways to get your baby to stop hiccuping as soon as possible?

Tip 1: Burping

This is one of the essential skills for all mothers. The simple steps are: hold the baby upright with the head resting on the shoulder, then put your five fingers together in the shape of an empty cup and gently pat the baby’s back.

Tip 2: Breastfeed or drink warm water

If burping doesn’t stop the hiccups, the mother can continue to feed the baby or drink some warm water (only babies over 6 months old can drink water), and after a while, the baby usually stops hiccuping.

Tip 3: Distraction

If all of the above fails, the mother can only offer one last trick – the distraction method. Toys, music, picture books, whatever your baby likes and has fun with, he or she can play with it and not care about the hiccups.

In daily life, mothers should pay more attention to the way their babies are fed, don’t feed them too quickly, and choose the right size for the hole of the bottle (a few drops of milk will stop when the bottle is turned over). Also, don’t shake the bottle hard when making milk, otherwise, it will produce a lot of bubbles and make the baby swallow too much air. The next thing is to pay attention to warmth, make sure your baby is dressed warmly before driving the window, don’t let kids suddenly inhale too much cold air. Don’t mind the trouble, as your baby grows up, they will soon be able to cope with it on its own.
